SoCo – The Journey To Date!

Soco Sports Performance Clinic - The Journey to Date

A Very Small Fish In A Very Big Ocean

Hi guys, my name is Conor and I’m the Clinic Director here at SoCo. Basically, I am the person responsible for bringing over a year’s worth of stress and frustration upon myself in getting this show on the road. That being said, there’s been a lot of highs along the way too and on balance I’d have to say they outweigh the hassle by a nice bit. Here’s hoping the balance continues to be skewed in the years ahead!

Getting Started

“Start before you’re ready” – Stephen Pressfield.
I remember sitting at home one day last May thinking through the life plans for the next few years. And while the Sports Performance Clinic was always there in the back of my mind (and had been for a good 10 years previously), I can’t pinpoint exactly what it was that made me decide to go for it, but that is what happened. Cue an opening of the laptop and a blank document and the first steps of writing of the business plan commenced.

A Turning Point

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination” – Jimmy Dean.
I had originally planned for the Clinic to be in another location after coming across a property I really liked. Unfortunately for me, it got snapped up a few hours after I viewed it and I remember seriously questioning was this whole process worth it – I thought the world had fallen in just because I hadn’t got this one property; an inconvenience I can laugh back at now considering how things worked out since! Two days later, the email comes from the letting agent wondering if I’d be interested in a property in Central Park. I thought I may as well go for a look… and the rest is history!

Highlight To Date

“The biggest challenge after success is shutting up about it” – Criss Jami.
There’s been a few – seeing the finalised logo, finding the location, getting the keys to the clinic, publishing the website, getting the first Instagram all rank up there. The one that stands out most though was seeing the window sign go up with the Clinic logo on it – it really brought home the journey to date and was a big big moment. That feeling didn’t last too long though, very soon I was hit with the realisation that the hard work to date was only small in comparison to the work to come!

“Never tell your problems to anyone…20% don’t care and the other 80% are glad you have them” – Lou Holtz.
Too many to mention – drawing up a business plan with endless revisions, trying not to get advice from too little or too many people, convincing the bank your idea is worthy of a loan, finding a suitable location, negotiating with the landlord on terms, negotiating with solicitors on dotting i’s and crossing t’s, going through the planning process, making budgets and sticking to them… have you got a few more hours to detail all the challenges?!!

“Never lie in bed at night asking yourself questions you can’t answer” – Charles M. Schulz.
I’ve been incredibly lucky that I’ve been able to call on people with unbelievable expertise in their areas throughout this process who have set me back on course – so my advice is to seek advice! There were so many things I hadn’t thought of, or had thought of incorrectly, only to be given the correct advice at crucial times. It’s no exaggeration to say I wouldn’t be sitting here writing this without all of those people, so definitely seek out the pros and get their two cents (for free if possible!!).

The Future

“In the planning stage of a book, don’t plan the ending. It has to be earned by all that will go before it” – Rose Tremain.
Its paradoxically very easy and very hard to write about the future of SoCo in these very, very early days. Who knows where advances in research in our field or in technology will lead us – but if we can create a successful Clinic where patients trust us enough to treat them, we contribute to the ongoing development of our professions, and is a desirable place to work with a happy staff, then I’ll be one very happy Clinic Director*!
